Principal Investigator

Yuan Xie was the founder of the SEAL lab. He received B.S. degree from Tsinghua University, and his M.S. and Ph.D. degrees from Electrical Engineering Department, Princeton University. He was with IBM Microelectronics Division's Worldwide Design Center, Pennsylvania State University, AMD Research, and UCSB. He is a Fellow of IEEE, a Fellow of ACM, and a Fellow of AAAS, and a recipient of NSF CAREER Award and IEEE Computer Society Edward J. McCluskey Technical Achievement Award in 2020.

Yufei Ding joined the Department of Computer Science (with a joint appointment in the Department of Electrical & Computer Engineering), University of California at Santa Barbara as an Assistant Professor in Nov 2017. She received her Ph.D. in Computer Science from North Carolina State University, and B.S. and M.S. in Physics from University of Science and Technology of China and the College of William and Mary, respectively. Her research interests lie in the broad fields of domain-specific language design, architecture and compiler optimization, and hardware acceleration. Her current research focuses on building high- performance, energy-efficient, and high-fidelity programming frameworks for emerging technologies such as quantum computing, machine learning, and deep learning.

Post-Doctoral Researchers

Lei Deng received his B.E. degree and Ph.D. degree from University of Science and Technology of China, Hefei, China, and Tsinghua University, Beijing, China, in 2012 and 2017, respectively. He is currently a Postdoc working with Professor Yuan Xie at Scalable Energy-Efficient Architecture Lab (SEAL), Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, University of California, Santa Barbara, CA, USA. His research interests include computer architecture, machine learning, brain-inspired computing, tensor analysis, and complex networks.

Dr. Tu received his B.E. degree and Ph.D. degree from Tsinghua University, Beijing, China. He is currently a Postdoc working at Scalable Energy-Efficient Architecture Lab (SEAL), Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, University of California, Santa Barbara, CA, USA. His research interests include computer architecture, machine learning, brain-inspired computing, in-memory computing.

Huang earned Ph.D. in Computer Engineering from Texas A&M University, where he worked with Professor Eun Jung (EJ) Kim. Previously, he received my B.Eng. in Information and Communication Engineering from Zhejiang University, China. His research interests lie in the fields of computer architecture and systems, particularly the interplay of machine learning and systems design. His dissertation focuses on specializing interconnects to accelerate emerging applications.
Doctoral Students

Liu Liu is currently a Ph.D. student working under the supervision of Professor Yuan Xie. After received his Master’s degree in Electrical and Computer Engineering from the University of California at Santa Barbara (UCSB), he joined the Department of Computer Science in 2016. Before his graduate study at UCSB, he received a Bachelor’s degree from the University of Electronic Science and Technology of China (UESTC) in 2013. His research interests include heterogeneous computer architecture, emerging non-volatile memory system design, hardware acceleration, and hardware security.

Wenqin Huangfu received his B.S. degree from Department of Electronic Engineering, Tsinghua University, in 2016. He started pursuing his Ph.D. degree from the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, University of California, Santa Barbara, under the supervision of Professor Yuan Xie in fall 2016. Wenqin’s research interests include hardware acceleration, non – volatile memory, novel computer architecture and design of energy efficient system.

Nan Wu is currently a Ph.D. student under the supervision of Prof. Yuan Xie. She received her B.S. degree in 2016 from Department of Electronic Engineering at Tsinghua University, Beijing, China, and M.S. degree in 2018 from UC Santa Barbara. Her research interests include: (1) machine learning for computer architecture and systems, (2) deep learning and reinforcement learning algorithms and applications.

Gushu Li is currently a Ph.D student at University of California, Santa Barbara since Fall 2017 supervised by Prof. Yuan Xie. He received B.E. in Electronic Engineering from Tsinghua University in 2015 and was a Ph.D student in Computer Science at the University of Chicago from 2015 to 2017.
His research interests are (1) quantum computing architecture and (2) processing-in-memory for emerging techniques.

Xinfeng Xie started the journey of pursuing his Ph.D. degree from Fall 2017 working with Prof. Yuan Xie in the University of California, Santa Barbara (UCSB). He received his B.S. degree from Peking University, Beijing, China in June 2017 prior to joining UCSB. His current research interests include domain-specific architecture designs for emerging applications and programming language supports for these architectures.

Boyuan Feng is currently a Ph.D. student at University of California, Santa Barbara since Fall 2017 supervised by Prof. Yufei Ding. He received his B.S. degree from Nanjing University in 2016 and his M.S. degree from Unversity of Wisconsin, Madison. His current research interests include: (1) efficient big data analysis; (2) robust and private deep learning.

Tianqi Tang received her B.S. degree in 2014 and her M.S. degree in 2017 from Department of Electronic Engineering in Tsinghua University, Beijing, China, and she is currently a Ph.D. student in UCSB under the supervision of Prof. Yuan Xie. Ms. Tang’s research mainly focuses on (1) Hardware Modeling and Domain Specific Accelerator Design (Project Site: http://mlpat.org/), (2) Processing-In-Memory and Non Volatile Memory. Before joining UCSB, she worked on neural network compression and quantization as an intern in Deephi (a start-up company now acquired by Xilinx) during her master program.

Since 2017, Bangyan Wang works in SEAL lab as a PhD student, advised by Prof. Yuan Xie. His current research area is architecture design for tensor process, especially for sparse tensor, low rank tensor analysis.

Ling Liang received his B.S. degree from Beijing University of Posts and Telecommunications in 2015, and his M.S. degree from University of Southern California in 2017. He is currently pursuing the Ph.D. degree from the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, University of California, Santa Barbara. Ling’s research interests include tensor computing, neural network security and spiking neural networks.

My name is Yuke Wang, a third-year Ph.D. in computer science at the University of California, Santa Barbara (UCSB), advised by Prof. Yufei Ding. Before I come to UCSB, I got my B.E. in software engineering from the University of Electronic Science and Technology of China (UESTC).
At UCSB, I have been working on projects in software-hardware co-design for distance-related algorithms, such as KNN, KMeans. I am also interested in deep learning, especially graph neural network (GNN) optimization and acceleration on heterogeneous platforms, such as GPUs.

Zheng Qu is currently a Ph.D. student working with Professor Yuan Xie in the University of California, Santa Barbara. He received his B.S. degree in 2018 from Department of Electronic Engineering at Tsinghua University, Beijing, China. Zheng’s research mainly focuses on (1) Energy efficient computing architecture and acceleration for machine learning applications, (2) Tensor application and hardware acceleration.

Jilan Lin is currently pursuing his Ph.D student at UCSB starting from Fall 2018. He received the B.E. degree in Dept. of Electronic Engineering in Tsinghua University, Beijing, China. His research interests include: (1) Application-driven in-memory processing (2) Machine learning algorithms and related hardware acceleration.

Zhaodong Chen (in Chinese: 陈昭东) is a Ph.D. student at Scalable Energy-Efficient Architecture Lab (SEAL) at University of California, Santa Barbara. His research interests lie in the intersection between Deep Learning and Computer Architecture.

Pengfei Xu is a Ph.D. student at University of California, Santa Barbara under the supervision of Professor Yuan Xie and Professor Yufei Ding. He received his B.E. from Shanghai Jiao Tong University. His research interest includes deep learning, computer architecture, and brain-computer interface.

Guyue is a Ph.D. student at ECE Department, UCSB, supervised by Prof. Yuan Xie and Prof. Yufei Ding. Previously, she received her B.E. from Tsinghua University in 2020. She was an exchange student at CS Dept., EPFL, in Spring 2019, and a visiting student at Cornell in Summer 2019. Her research interest is computer architecture.

Anbang Wu is a first-year Ph.D. student in the computer science department with a specialization in quantum computation at the University of California, Santa Barbara. Anbang received both his Master of Engineering degree and Bachelor of Engineering degree in Computer Science from Zhejiang University in China. He is interested in developing quantum computing algorithms and software that squeeze all the computational power out of near-term quantum computers. More specifically, his work examines how to compile quantum programs into efficient and noise-resilient hardware control instructions on specific quantum devices. Recently, he has become interested in quantum machine learning which can describe atypical data patterns that classical machine learning cannot.
