Principal Investigator

Prof. Yuan Xie joined UCSB in Fall 2014 after 11 years with Penn State University (2003-2014). He received B.S. degree from Tsinghua University, and his M.S. and Ph.D. degrees from Electrical Engineering Department, Princeton University. Prior to joining Penn State in 2003, he worked as an Advisory Engineer for IBM Microelectronics Division's Worldwide Design Center. He was also on-leave in 2012-13 to work with AMD Research. He was a recipient of the NSF CAREER award. He is a Fellow of IEEE.

Doctoral Students

Kaisheng Ma is a Ph.D. candidate in Department of Computer Science and Engineering at Pennsylvania State University since Fall 2013. He received his  M.E. from Peking University. He is advised by Dr. Vijaykrishnan Narayanan and Dr. Yuan Xie . His research interests include computer architecture and data science with a focus on Self-Powered Neuromorphic Vision Processors, non-volatile memory architecture, hardware acceleration for machine learning, and neuromorphic chip.

I'm a PhD student in Dept. of ECE, UCSB since 2015.  Before I transferd with my advisor, I spent a semster in Dept. of CSE, PSU. I recieved my B.S. and M.S. degree from Dept. of EE, Tsinghua University, in 2011 and 2014 respectively. My research interest is NVM circuit and architecture design and optimization. Previously, I also worked on system-level synthesis, nonvolatile processor based energy harvesting system, and nonvolatile processor.

After completing my bachelor’s degree as a computer engineer in the ECE Department at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in 2014, I joined the University of California, Santa Barbara as a Ph.D student under Professor Yuan Xie. My research interests include computer architecture, memory system architecture, and emerging memory technologies. 


Dylan Stow started at the University of California, Santa Barbara in Fall 2015 as a PhD student working with Professor Yuan Xie. Dylan received his M.S in Computer Architecture and VLSI/CAD from UCSB in 2017 and his B.S. degree from Harvey Mudd College in 2013. After graduating, he joined AMD as a physical circuit designer and contributed to the floating-point hardware in the recently-released Zen core.
His current research interests are (1) Architecture and design for emerging die-integration methodologies (e.g. 3D, 2.5D, FOWLP) with a focus on cost-driven design, IP reuse, and heterogeneous process integration, (2) hardware security, with an emphasis on hardware
techniques to prevent side-channel information leakage and IP piracy, and (3) efficient brain-inspired hardware that leverages emerging NVM and packaging technologies. Previously, he researched 3D machine learning accelerators for Qualcomm, floating point microarchitectures for Intel and Oracle Labs, and near-threshold CMOS cell design for yield-driven ultra-low power circuits.

 

Maohua Zhu is now a PhD candidate in ECE Department of University of California, Santa Barbara (UCSB). He received both M.S and B.S. degree in Electronics Engineering from Tsinghua University in 2011 and 2007. After graduation from Tsinghua University, he joined AMD Research Beijing as a research engineer. In June 2015, he started the doctoral program in UCSB supervised by Prof. Yuan Xie. Maohua used to work for AMD and Microsoft Research Asia as an intern during his master program in Tsinghua University. His research interest is hardware acceleration of machine learning algorithms.

Peng Gu received his B.S. degree from Tsinghua University, Beijing, China, in 2015. He is currently pursuing the Ph.D. degree from the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, University of California, Santa Barbara. Peng’s research interests include low power system design, hardware acceleration and computing with emerging technologies.

Liu Liu is currently a Ph.D. student working under the supervision of Professor Yuan Xie. After received his Master’s degree in Electrical and Computer Engineering from the University of California at Santa Barbara (UCSB), he joined the Department of Computer Science in 2016. Before his graduate study at UCSB, he received a Bachelor’s degree from the University of Electronic Science and Technology of China (UESTC) in 2013. His research interests include heterogeneous computer architecture, emerging non-volatile memory system design, hardware acceleration, and hardware security.  

Wenqin Huangfu received his B.S. degree from Department of Electronic Engineering, Tsinghua University, in 2016. He started pursuing his Ph.D. degree from the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, University of California, Santa Barbara, under the supervision of Professor Yuan Xie in fall 2016. Wenqin’s research interests include hardware acceleration, non – volatile memory, novel computer architecture and design of energy efficient system. 

Abanti Basak received her B.S.E. degree in Electrical Engineering from Princeton University in May 2016. She started as a Ph.D. student in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at UCSB under the supervision of Professor Yuan Xie in fall 2016. Her research interests include novel computer architecture and the design of energy efficient systems. 

Alvin Oliver Glova received his B.S. degree in Computer Engineering from the University of the Philippines Diliman in 2009 and his M.S. degree in Electrical Engineering from the Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST) in 2012. He is a Research Engineer at the New Memory Device Technology Group, R&D Division in SK Hynix, Korea where he has been involved in STT-MRAM development since 2012. From Fall 2016, he will be pursuing his Ph.D. degree from the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering in the University of California, Santa Barbara under Prof. Yuan Xie. His research interests include emerging non-volatile memory technologies, computer architecture and memory systems.

Masters Students

I am Linuo Xue and a master in ECE department. I am from China and joined SEAL in spring 2015. In my undergraduate school, I focused on power electronics and motor design. On the first master year, my major is VLSI and minor is computer architecture. I am interested in embedded system and non-volatile memory. 

Russell began the master's program in Electrical and Computer Engineering with a focus in Computer Engineering at University of California, Santa Barbara in 2015.  He received a bachelor's degree in Electrical and Computer Engineering with a minor in Computer Science from Oregon State University in Corvallis, Oregon.  Before joining Professor Xie's team, Russell worked as an intern for Intel in SOC power & performance and Radisys Corporation in system integration, and he spent half of a year as an exchange student at the Technical University of Denmark.  His research interests include computer architecture, embedded systems, virtual & augmented reality and digital design.

Undergraduate Student

My name is Chunqing Liu. I’m a 3nd year undergraduate student at University of California, Santa Barbara majoring in Computer Engineering and minoring in Mathematics. So far, I am interested in computer programming, digital design with Verilog, and sensor and peripheral interface design.

My name is Nicole Moghaddas and I am a third year undergraduate student at University of California, Santa Barbara majoring in Computer Engineering. I have a passion for computer architecture and computer programming, and am very interested in machine learning and embedded systems.

My name is Rachel Reyes and I am a third year undergraduate electrical engineering student at UCSB. My research interests include circuit design and semiconductor device fabrication and design. I plan to complete the ECE M.S. program at UCSB after graduation.
